Music Sacra Concludes 27th Season With Fauré’s Requiem

Music Sacra Concludes 27th Season With Fauré’s Requiem

Choral, Orchestral
To conclude its 27th season, Musica Sacra Chorus and Orchestra will perform one of the world’s most popular sacred choral masterpieces, the Requiem, by French romantic composer Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 22, in the Arrupe Hall auditorium. Fauré began work on his composition in late 1887. Many of the most popular sections of the Requiem were not part of the original draft. The famous Libera Me baritone solo and chorus were originally composed as a separate work and added in 1891. The opening and closing movements were the final sections composed in 1894. The original orchestration was unusual — divided violas and cellos, double bass, harp, organ, trumpets, and timpani, with horns added later. Fauré’s publisher recommended a standard symphonic orchestration, published in 1901. Musica Sacra will also perform the Messa à 3 Voci by Alessandro Grandi (1586-1630), edited by Musica Sacra director Timothy McDonald. Before the performance, music director and conductor Timothy L. McDonald will present Live Program Notes beginning at 6:15 p.m. Tickets ($22 adults, $12 for students and senior citizens) may be purchased through the Central Ticket Office at 816-235-6222, online at, or at the performance. Free parking is available in the garage at 52nd Street and Troost Avenue and in all campus lots accessed through the University’s entrance at 54th Street and Troost Avenue. See
